The Mother on Sri Aurobindo's Thoughts and Aphorisms

Sri Aurobindo wrote Thoughts and Aphorisms during the early part of his stay in Pondicherry, certainly before May 1915. Sri Aurobindo wrote the main series of these aphorisms in single notebook, grouping them in three sections: Jnana, Karma and Bhakti. He revised them but were never published during his life time.

The Mother's commentaries on Sri Aurobindo's Thoughts and Aphorisms were given over the twelve year period extending from 1958 to 1970.

1. In 1958, the Mother answered orally to questions submitted to her during her "Wednesday classes" at the Ashram Playground.
2. During 1960-61, the Mother answered mostly in writting to questions written to her by a young "captain" of the Ashram's physical education department.
3. During 1962-66, the Mother answered orally to a disciple. She digressed more and more from direct commentary on the aphorisms and used the occasion to explain the experiences she was having at the time.
4. During 1969-70, the Mother gave brief written replies to questions asked by the captain mentioned above. All the Mother's commentaries , spoke and written, were in French.
